Moving from a large house into a small apartment often presents a number of challenges. What should you take with you and what should you do with everything else? The first rule to remember is therefore:
1. Start planning early
It’s not practical to be paralysed with fear once your move-in date starts approaching. If you start packing well ahead of time, you can take things slowly, perhaps a couple of boxes a day. Moving also offers a golden opportunity to get rid of things, so start by organising your things.
If you do this, you won't have to bother with point no. 3. Give away things to family, friends, charities, the Salvation Army or flea markets. Perhaps you can also make money by selling things online. What you don't get rid of can be recycled. Make things easier by putting everything to be recycled at the back of the moving van.
2. Make sure you have enough boxes and packing materials
Buy moving boxes in different sizes. Packing paper and bubble wrap are next on the list. Old newspapers and towels are perfect for wrapping things that can easily break. Clas Ohlson, IKEA and several other shops have a large selection of packing materials that can simplify the moving process.
3. Remember all the small parts
Some items and furniture will probably need to be taken apart, leaving you with lots of small parts and screws. Tape these to the object itself or put them all in small plastic bags. This makes everything much easier to find after moving.
4. Label all boxes
Labelling boxes saves you a lot of work once you move into your new home. Write down in detail what each box contains and which room it is intended for. Also write FRAGILE or GLASS on boxes that contain breakable items.
It is a good idea to pack a box or two of the most essential items you'll need the first few days, such as a bread knife, a few plates, glasses, cups and toiletries.
5. Mail and change of address
In our digital everyday life, it's easy to register a change of address for receiving mail online, as well as for subscriptions. You can also use the change of address forms available at the post office and send them free of charge. It’s a good idea to do this well ahead of your move-in date, so you won't miss any important mail or have to stare at a blank TV screen after you've moved into your new home.
Good luck with your move - and congratulations on your new home!
Make a list of:
- What you know you need to take with you to your new home.
- What you need to take with you, but can be stored in a storage room or basement.
- What can be thrown away, given away or sold.
