If you’ve found your dream study programme, we’ve got your dream housing. Diagonale student housing is located in the heart of the city’s newest and trendiest area. It’s close to the Oslo city centre’s public transportation hub and a number of eateries and shops are right outside the front door.  

Some of the student housing has views of the Oslo Opera House, where you will also find Oslo’s newest sandy beach. There are also a number of saunas in the area that make bathing tempting during the winter months - something not many students elsewhere can claim.

Location

The closest neighbours to the student housing include Deichman Bjørvika, the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum. You are also right next to Norway’s largest public transportation hub. You can walk to the Oslo S central railway station in only a few minutes and from here it’s easy to get to Blindern, BI or anywhere else in the world.

Frequently asked questions about student housing

Rent

  • What is included in rent?

    Hot water and Wi-Fi are included in rent, as well as caretaker services and cleaning of the common areas. 

    Electricity and transmission tariffs are not included. You will be sent a separate invoice and after receiving the first invoice, you can switch to a different electric company if desired. 

  • When is rent paid?

    Rent is paid on the 15th of each month. 

  • Do I have to pay a deposit?

    Yes, either a standard deposit of two months' rent or a rental guarantee (deposit of 12% of the deposit amount) is required as security. The deposit must be paid before the keys can be handed over. Contact one of our housing consultants to check whether you meet the requirements for a rental guarantee. 

  • How much does student housing cost?

    Student housing rates vary depending on the size and location within the building. 

    A studio of 22 m² to 29 m² costs from NOK 10,000 per month. 
    A studio of 30 m² to 40 m² costs from NOK 11,500 per month.
    A studio of 40 m² to 60 m² (couples are prioritised) costs from NOK 13,000 per month.

Contract and practical information

  • How long can I stay in student housing?

    Students can stay for up to four years. There is a possibility for a postponement if you have a valid reason (military, sick leave and other valid reason).  We offer both one-year and three-year contracts based on the length of your study programme. 

  • Can I keep the student housing during the summer holidays?

    Yes. A rental contract with the Diagonale is for a minimum of 12 months. 

  • Can I cancel the contract?

    If you have a contract that is valid for more than 12 months, written notice of termination must be sent to the housing consultant. In this case, two months’ notice applies from the first of the following month.

  • Do I need home contents insurance?

    Yes. The Diagonale does not insure tenants’ private property, so make sure you have home contents insurance before moving in.

Application process

  • Who can apply for student housing?

    Who can apply for student housing?  Anyone who has been admitted to a study programme for higher education at an approved school in Oslo or Akershus or who has been awarded housing and accepted it. You must earn at least 30 credits per semester to be an approved applicant. Apprentices can also apply for student housing at the Diagonale. Read the allocation rules in full

  • How is student housing awarded?

    Student housing is awarded on a first come, first served basis. Vacant apartments are awarded according to who has applied first and meets the application requirements.

  • How large is the student housing?

    Studio of 22 m² to 29 m² for 1 person
    Studio of 30 m² to 40 m² for 1 person or studio
    of 40 m² to 60 m² for 1 person or a couple

  • Is there Wi-Fi in the student housing?

    Yes, the rent includes 100 Mbps Wi-Fi. 

  • Is student housing furnished?

    No, the apartments are unfurnished, but have a separate bathroom and kitchen with appliances. Fixed roller blinds are installed on the inside. On the outside of the windows are sun and heat reflective blinds that adapt automatically to the amount of brightness outside.

  • Are pets allowed?

    No animals are allowed in student housing.

  • Are there any appliances in the student housing?

    Yes, a refrigerator and stove are included. There is no freezer in the student apartment.
    There is no connection for a washing machine in the apartments. There is a shared laundry room on the 4th and 5th floors with online booking. Price: NOK 15 per washing load and NOK 10 per drying load. 

  • Does student housing have a storage area?

    Yes, there is a basement storage area for those apartments that do not have a storage room in the apartment. Rental rate is NOK 200 per month.

  • What parking options are available?

    Parking is not available. There is a large bicycle parking area in the basement, with the option of entering through a separate entrance. Here you can wash your bike and inflate your tyres. All bicycles must be labelled with a name and phone number. Bicycles that are not labelled will be removed.
