The AMFI Moa is an important shopping destination and transportation hub in Ålesund, with growing demand for spaces. We began working on the 'Moa 2020' project in 2012 as part of a continuous development of the AMFI Moa through the year 2020. The resulting development will house over 200 tenants, with an expected total turnover of more than NOK 3.5 billion, making it one of Norway's largest shopping centres measured in turnover.
The centre consists of three building components: Moa Nord, Moa Syd and Moa Øst, with a bridge connecting the Moa Syd and Moa Nord. The construction project has five phases that ultimately bring all three components closer together.
Part 1 – First construction phase
The first construction phase was carried out in 2012-13 and entailed an expansion of the Moa Nord of 5,535 square metres over two floors.
Part 2 – Brofestebygget
The second construction phase was the Moa Øst and creation of the Brofestebygget. This construction project started in 2014 and was completed in August 2015. The building is almost 3,000 square metres over four levels, with a bridge (next phase) connecting the new east side of the centre with the Moa Syd.
Part 3 – Extension and renovation
The third construction phase consisted of an extension to the Moa Øst and overall renovation of that part of the centre, resulting in an additional 2,200 square metres and greater capacity utilisation of the current space. This work began in May 2015 and was completed in the spring of 2016.
Part 4 – Retail, food service, cinema and offices
The fourth construction phase began with the demolition of existing buildings and expansion of the Moa Syd. A new building was then built with five floors: a traditional shopping centre with common areas and shops, with a strong focus on food service establishments. The ODEON cinema was built on the third floor,
while the fourth and fifth floors house 5,400 square metres of office space. The total surface area of the new building is 36,000 square metres and it was completed in November of 2018.
Part 5 – Bridge connecting the extension to the Amfi Moa
The fifth construction phase was to construct a bridge 60 metres long and 10 metres wide. Construction began at the end of June 2018 and the resulting bridge connects all sections of the AMFI Moa to form a single unit. This strengthens the Moa as a shopping area, reduces car use between the centres and makes the Moa the strongest retail shopping destination in Central Norway, with a total surface area of around 122,000 square metres.
