About the centre
Located centrally on the main street of Longyearbyen, Lompensenteret is a natural meeting place for people in Svalbard. In addition, Svalbard is located in a VAT-free area, which makes Lompensenteret an attractive centre for tourists. The name has been kept from the time when the building housed changing rooms, a café and laundry for miners, whose work clothes were called lomp in Norwegian. The building has been upgraded several times and underwent a complete renovation in 2018/2019.
Market and customer base
The local population is around 2,500, but there are large seasonal variations and during the year, the centre is visited by lots of tourists with strong purchasing power from both Norway and abroad. During the summer season in particular, numerous cruise ships arrive, ranging in size from small to large. There are also daily flights from Tromsø and Oslo, in addition to charter flights at certain times of the year.
Retail mix
Lompensenteret has a good mix of food service establishments and shops, as well as offices on the second floor. Svalbard is not subject to VAT, which makes the centre and Longyearbyen an attractive shopping destination.

Location and accessibility
The Lompensenteret is located on the main street in Longyearbyen close to everything and surrounded by unique and amazing Arctic nature. The centre, as well as the city, is only a five-minute drive from the airport and visitors can take an airport bus or taxi to the centre. The centre also has its own parking lot.
